The LA times is reporting today that radical environmentalists were convicted of arson for their role in burning down a horse slaughterhouse. What goes through an environmentalists head when he thinks burning a building is good for the environment? Seems counterproductive and gives the rest of us a real bad name. I want the word environmentalist to be equated with “healthy earth” and good things for our lives and the lives of our children. Seems to me that burning down someone else’s property for the better of the earth has the following side effects:

  1. It’s illegal, so you go to jail
  2. It’s immoral, so your organization loses credibility
  3. Creates a negative image for all other environmentalists who really mean well
  4. Burning a building on purpose is bad for the environment
  5. You could harm the people and animals in the building
