18 Seconds
Posted by Ed Maurer:
18 seconds is the time it takes to change an incandescent light bulb to a CFL. Yahoo is sponsoring the 18 Seconds movement to get more people to use CFL’s. The data from this site comes from retailers sales data and represents CFL’s purchased since 1/1/2007.
My state ranked 40 out of 50 in the 18 Seconds ranking (at the time of this post.) Obviously Michigan is not one of the most environmentally conscious states.

Greenwashing
Posted by: Joseph Hershey
I just read an interesting pdf from Scott Case of TerraChoice Environmental Marketing on the “Six Sins of Greenwashing”.
- Greenwash “…is a term that is used to describe the actions of a company, government, or other organization which advertises positive environmental practices while acting in the opposite way.” — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwash .
- EcoLogo “…is North America’s most widely recognized and respected multi-attribute environmental certification mark.” — http://www.environmentalchoice.com/English/Home .
- EcoLogo belongs to the Government of Canada and is currently being stewarded by TerraChoice Environmental Marketing.
According to Scott, the six points, or sins to watch out for are:
- Sin of Vagueness
- Sin of Unverified Claims
- Sin of Irrelevance
- Sin of Fibbing
- Sin of the Hidden Trade-Off
- Sin of Relativism
For further information on greenwashing, examples of each type of sin, or how to verify that a product is or isn’t EcoLogo certified, I refer you to the references made above.
