18 Seconds

Posted by Ed Maurer:
18 seconds is the time it takes to change an incandescent light bulb to a CFL. Yahoo is sponsoring the 18 Seconds movement to get more people to use CFL’s. The data from this site comes from retailers sales data and represents CFL’s purchased since 1/1/2007.
My state ranked 40 out of 50 in the 18 Seconds ranking (at the time of this post.) Obviously Michigan is not one of the most environmentally conscious states.

I just read an interesting pdf from Scott Case of TerraChoice Environmental Marketing on the “Six Sins of Greenwashing”.

  • Greenwash “…is a term that is used to describe the actions of a company, government, or other organization which advertises positive environmental practices while acting in the opposite way.” — .
  • EcoLogo “…is North America’s most widely recognized and respected multi-attribute environmental certification mark.” — .
  • EcoLogo belongs to the Government of Canada and is currently being stewarded by TerraChoice Environmental Marketing.

According to Scott, the six points, or sins to watch out for are:

  1. Sin of Vagueness
  2. Sin of Unverified Claims
  3. Sin of Irrelevance
  4. Sin of Fibbing
  5. Sin of the Hidden Trade-Off
  6. Sin of Relativism

For further information on greenwashing, examples of each type of sin, or how to verify that a product is or isn’t EcoLogo certified, I refer you to the references made above.
